Championship Manager 17 makes a returns for another free-to-play go around the soccer field (Download)
Another year, another round of soccer manager games. The first up for Android this fall is Square-Enix's franchise Championship Manager, or as it's more entertainingly known to players, "Champ Man." This one is named 17, because that's one more than the year we're in right now. As is tradition.
I'd be lying if I said that I can see the appeal of Championship Manager. To me it's basically a series of roleplaying spreadsheets that represent athletes instead of adventurers. But these games sell millions of copies on consoles and PCs every year (hell, Konami's Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution series might be the only actual game the company is producing at this point), so clearly there's something compelling to the act of managing a bunch of numbers and icons. And if you want said numbers, Champ Man 17 has a lot of them: 450 teams, 25 leagues, 12 countries, all represented with names, numbers, and dots. Of course, that's the same lineup the game boasted in last year's edition - ditto for the language support in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Malay.
So what's new? Well, aside from the picture of Tottenham Hotspur football club manager Mauricio Pochettino on the promo screenshots, the listing claims that there's a "new, easier to use interface" and "all-new features." Exactly what said features are isn't enumerated, but I'm sure fans of the series will be able to tell. Those same fans might be willing to shell out $100 for the game's in-app currency purchases. In fact they must be, or else we wouldn't keep getting a new one every year.
