Microsoft to free up 1 Million abandoned Xbox Live gamertags Wednesday

Seeing "username already taken" is one of the biggest pains ever. But luckily, this week, you might finally get that sweet moniker you've always wanted.

Microsoft will free up 1 million Xbox gamertags starting Wednesday, which will let certain gamers claim abandoned account names.

There is one catch, though. Only Xbox Live Gold members with a year's worth of Gold status since 2002 can claim old gamertags.

The old usernames will be freed in waves. The first wave of accounts will become available at 2 p.m. The rest will be staggered over a period of 24 hours to give gamers around the world an equal chance to nab a tag.

Microsoft won't be publishing a list of the abandoned accounts ahead of time, so those interested in changing their names will have to prepare their desired gamertag and do a lot of guessing.

To prepare for the flood gates (of usernames) to open, visit the Xbox website and log in. Changing a gamertag will be free. However, if it's been changed before it'll cost users $10.
